"Leo, if you could make a durable pallet out of plastic that would really hold up, now that would be something."
The year was 1969, and Leo Nathans, founder of PDQ Plastics, was on the plane back from a General Motors sales call with those words still ringing in his ears.
Mr. Leo Nathans had been speaking to a buyer at GM when the subject of plastic durable pallets came up. Mr. Nathans was representing a partnership, PATTI PLASTICS, that was supplying vacuum formed dunnage to several GM facilities. Captain Nathans, US Air Force, Ret. had gone into the plastics business after piloting B-29's in both WWII and Korea. The idea of making durable pallets out of plastic was in its infancy. Several companies were making plastic pallets, but none had particularly impressed Leo or the buyers at GM. "Too flimsy. Too brittle." These were the reports that were coming back from the GM Tech Center, where extensive testing of alternative, returnable packaging had already begun.
With a background that included just enough knowledge to keep him from knowing something COULDN'T be done, Leo went back to his shop and molded a small plastic "foot" that would be the design-foundation upon which the 40 x 48 "Super D" would be built. With one machine of his own design, Leo Nathans took the words of that GM buyer to heart and began producing a plastic pallet that would, indeed, "hold up" under the toughest industrial conditions. PDQ PLASTICS was born.
True to his word, the GM buyer had the "Super D" tested and it proved to be more durable than any other plastic pallet on the market. Tens of thousands of pallets later, the "Super D" is still used by GM for its toughest material handling requirements.
"We have stuck to that basic principle since the beginning," said Barry Nathans, son of Leo and current PDQ president. "After serving in Viet Nam, I joined my father at PATTI PLASTICS. I was there when the first "Super D" came out of the mold, and we all knew we had done something special. My Dad had many opportunities to make a lighter duty, cheaper pallet, but that was never his intention. He always thought that a product should deliver the best possible return on the buyers dollar, and every pallet that we have made since those early days has done just that. Our customers report extended service life of five, ten and even fifteen years in some cases. Those are years on the job, and out of the waste stream."
